Boat Non-Skid Repair
Non-skid is an important part of any boat restoration because it is both a safety feature and a major part of how a finished deck looks. Factory-molded fiberglass non-skid eventually wears down, and on an older boat it may provide very little traction at all. My Albin 27 was nearly 40 years old and had virtually no effective non-skid remaining, so restoring the deck meant creating a new surface that was safe, durable and looked appropriate on the boat.

Choosing a Boat Non-Skid Material
There are many ways to restore boat non-skid, including silica or sand mixed with paint, adhesive foam products and synthetic decking. For this restoration I wanted something economical, comfortable underfoot, easy to apply and—importantly—easy to repair later. I chose SoftSand, a soft rubber-like non-skid aggregate that can be used with marine deck paint. Unlike traditional hard silica or sand, it produces a softer texture while still providing the traction needed on a working deck.
Designing the Non-Skid Pattern
Good boat non-skid starts with the layout. Rather than coating the entire deck, I divide the non-skid into defined areas with consistent borders. I generally use 1½- to 2-inch spaces, using the width of the masking tape to maintain consistent spacing around the boat. Taking time to design the pattern before painting produces a cleaner finished deck and prevents the non-skid from overwhelming the appearance of a recreational boat.

Preparing and Masking the Deck
Start with a clean, sound deck surface. Existing gelcoat can be used if it is in good condition; damaged decks may need repairs and painting first. Accurate masking is critical because the tape establishes the finished edges of the non-skid areas. I use high-quality yellow 3M automotive masking tape rather than ordinary blue painter’s tape because it consistently produces a cleaner edge. Remove the tape once the coating begins to set rather than allowing it to cure completely.
Applying SoftSand Non-Skid
SoftSand can be mixed directly into paint, but I prefer the broadcast method. Roll on the first coat of paint and, while it is still wet, sprinkle the aggregate evenly over the surface. For large areas I use a modified flour shaker with an additional screen to control the amount of material; a small spice shaker works well around corners and other tight areas. The objective is consistent coverage across every non-skid section.
Building a Uniform, Durable Surface
After the first coat dries, sweep away the loose SoftSand and save uncontaminated material for reuse. Inspect the deck for uniform coverage, then apply a second coat of paint to trap the particles in the surface. A third and final coat fully encapsulates the aggregate and produces a consistent color and texture. All three coats can be applied with a simple paint roller. Avoid making the second coat unnecessarily heavy—the objective is to seal the aggregate without burying the texture.


Repairing Boat Non-Skid Later
One advantage of this system is repairability. If the finished non-skid is later chipped, scraped or damaged, a small area can be recoated and fresh aggregate applied without replacing an entire section of decking. The finished surface has a sandpaper-like texture but remains comparatively soft underfoot. Careful masking and softened or clipped corners also make the finished non-skid look intentional rather than simply painted onto the deck.
