Repairing and Reinforcing Boat Deck Hardware
Installing or replacing boat deck hardware often requires more than drilling holes and adding sealant. Cleats, stanchions, rails, winches, davits and other fittings can place significant loads on fiberglass decks, while poorly sealed penetrations can allow water into the deck core. The projects below cover repairing damaged mounting areas, reinforcing fiberglass structures, adding backing plates and blocks, rebuilding penetrations, and properly mounting and sealing deck hardware on sailboats and trawlers.

Deck hardware is only as strong and watertight as the fiberglass structure underneath it. Cleats, stanchions, rails, winches, davits and other hardware can place substantial loads on relatively thin fiberglass decks, while improperly sealed fastener holes provide a direct path for water into the deck core.
These projects show how I repair and reinforce fiberglass around deck hardware and penetrations, including rebuilding damaged mounting areas, adding structural backing, reinforcing fiberglass and properly sealing and preparing penetrations before hardware is installed. The objective is to create a strong mounting surface that distributes hardware loads while preventing water intrusion into the surrounding fiberglass and core.
