Sanding and Surface Preparation
Proper surface preparation determines how well fiberglass repairs, primers and paint will ultimately look and perform. Sanding fiberglass removes old coatings, smooths repairs and fairing compound, blends transitions, and creates the surface needed for subsequent coatings to bond properly. These projects demonstrate practical fiberglass sanding and surface-preparation techniques used on hulls, decks, bulkheads and newly fabricated composite parts during sailboat and trawler restoration.

Sanding fiberglass is one of the most important—and time-consuming—parts of boat restoration. Before fiberglass can be repaired, faired, primed or painted, the existing surface must be properly prepared. That can mean removing old paint and coatings, leveling previous repairs, smoothing fairing compound, eliminating surface imperfections and creating the correct surface for the next material to bond.
Different stages of a restoration require different sanding tools, abrasives and levels of surface preparation. Aggressive sanding may be necessary during fiberglass repair and fabrication, while progressively finer sanding prepares faired surfaces for primer and final paint. Hulls, decks, nonskid and newly fabricated fiberglass components can each require a different approach.
