I use what I call the 10-Foot Rule for amateur boat restoration: the finished fiberglass should look clean, smooth and professional from normal viewing distance. Achieving that requires repeatedly sanding, fairing, inspecting and preparing the surface until repairs and construction transitions visually disappear. Primer and paint are the final steps, but the quality of the finished fiberglass is largely determined by the surface preparation underneath.
Good fiberglass finishing begins with proper surface preparation. Sanding removes high spots, smooths fairing compound, blends fiberglass repairs and exposes the small divots, waves and imperfections that become obvious after primer and paint are applied. The objective is to create a uniform surface that looks properly finished, not endlessly sand in pursuit of an unrealistic professional mold-quality finish.
