If you love wooden boat building or have ever wondered what it takes to become a professional shipwright, this video provides a rare look inside a working wooden boat shop on the northern coast of Spain. I visit Enrique García, a Carpintero de Ribera, who builds and restores boats using both traditional craftsmanship and modern epoxy-plywood construction. We tour his workshop, examine wooden dinghy restorations and boats based on François Vivier designs such as Ure and Ilur, and discuss tools, materials, lapstrake construction and epoxy systems. Enrique also explains the realities of maintaining 50–70-year-old wooden sailboats and what education, experience, mistakes and patience teach you about making a living as a wooden boat builder.

If you love antique wooden boats and traditional boat restoration, the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, New York offers an extraordinary look at how these boats were designed, built and preserved. In this video, I tour the museum’s collection of more than 320 historic boats, including wooden sailboats, classic runabouts, racing boats, canoes, kayaks, lapstrake boats and the Thousand Islands One Design. I also visit the museum workshops and talk with volunteers about wooden boat restoration, varnishing, repair techniques and the role amateur restorers play in preserving historic boats. The collection provides a hands-on look at traditional wooden boat construction and craftsmanship across generations of recreational and working boats.

Owning and Restoring an 85-Year-Old Wooden Sailboat

What does it really take to keep an antique wooden sailboat alive for generations? In this video, I visit an 85-year-old 1940 Forester 26 sloop named Hope, built in Detroit from African mahogany and white oak and maintained by the same owner for nearly 60 years. Dennis walks me through the boat’s construction, restoration and ongoing maintenance, including the replacement of more than 1,400 fasteners, repairing and preserving the wooden structure, and even machining replacement fittings by hand. More than simply a tour of a classic sailboat, this project provides a rare look at the long-term craftsmanship, maintenance and commitment required to preserve an historic wooden boat.

Learning Wooden Boat Building at Great Lakes Boat Building School

If you’ve ever wondered how traditional wooden boat builders and marine technicians learn their craft, this video takes you inside the Great Lakes Boat Building School in Cedarville, Michigan. I tour the workshops and talk with professional boat builder Tom Coates about how students develop practical skills through hands-on construction and restoration. We look at students building Indian River skiffs from scratch, cedar-strip construction, material and tool selection, precision woodworking and traditional hand-tool techniques. The visit provides a firsthand look at wooden boat-building education and how craftsmanship, patience and practical experience are developed before those skills are applied professionally to classic boat construction and restoration.
