Trawler Restoration: How to Restore and Refit an Older Trawler

Have you ever wanted to restore an older trawler but weren’t sure where to start? Motor City Boat Werks documents real-world DIY trawler restoration and refit projects from assessment through completion, using my Albin 27 Family Cruiser pocket trawler as the primary working project. Follow the process of stripping an older fiberglass trawler to a bare hull and rebuilding its major systems, including fiberglass and composite construction, diesel engine repowering, drivetrain installation, fuel and water systems, electrical and lithium battery systems, plumbing, steering, thrusters, air conditioning, interior construction, deck restoration and cruising equipment. My approach is based on more than 30 years of amateur boat restoration, with an emphasis on careful planning, practical construction, controlling costs and rebuilding an older trawler into a reliable boat intended for real extended cruising.

Many trawler restoration projects begin with the same work you encounter restoring an older sailboat: stopping leaks, repairing fiberglass and damaged deck core, rebuilding structural components, refinishing the interior and addressing the engine and propulsion system. But restoring a trawler for long-term cruising or liveaboard use adds another layer of complexity. Now the boat must support daily life aboard, which means integrating reliable electrical and battery systems, freshwater and waste plumbing, hot water, refrigeration, heating and air conditioning, navigation electronics, charging systems, steering, thrusters and other cruising equipment into the restoration. The challenge isn’t simply repairing an old boat—it is making all of these systems fit, function together and remain serviceable while transforming an older trawler or motor yacht into a capable long-term cruising boat.

A major trawler restoration or motor yacht refit is ultimately about rebuilding and integrating dozens of interconnected systems. Starting with my Albin 27 stripped to a bare fiberglass hull, I have to design, select and install the diesel propulsion and drivetrain, electrical and lithium battery systems, freshwater and waste plumbing, navigation electronics, steering and thrusters, heating and air conditioning, and interior equipment so everything works together as one reliable cruising boat. Restoring an older trawler also creates an opportunity to replace obsolete equipment with modern technology, but every upgrade creates new problems involving space, power requirements, installation, compatibility and integration with other systems. Motor City Boat Werks documents that problem-solving process—how components are selected, why particular equipment is chosen, how the individual systems are designed and installed, and how they are ultimately integrated into a complete trawler restoration.

These boat restoration rules are based on more than 30 years of hands-on experience restoring over 13 sailboats and powerboats. I’ve documented what I’ve learned through a boat restoration book, published magazine articles, and now more than 180 YouTube episodes covering real DIY boat restoration projects from assessment and planning through completion. Follow along as I share the practical rules, techniques, mistakes and lessons learned that can help you plan and successfully complete your own sailboat restoration.

Follow my complete Albin 27 pocket trawler diesel engine repower series, as I document every step required to replace an aging marine diesel with a new engine in an older fiberglass boat. This series covers the entire marine diesel repower process, including engine selection, measuring the engine compartment, comparing specifications, ordering and actual costs, removing the old engine, preparing the engine room, installing the new diesel, engine mounts, transmission, propeller shaft and drivetrain alignment, cooling, exhaust, fuel, electrical and charging systems, controls, testing and final installation.

The goal is to create a practical, real-world guide for anyone considering a DIY diesel engine replacement or repower in an older sailboat, trawler or cruising boat.
