How Long Does It Take To Build or Restore a Boat ?

Simple answer: For an amateur, building or restoring a boat can take anywhere from several weeks to several years. The actual timeline depends on the boat’s size and condition, the scope of the project, your experience, available workspace, financial resources, and the number of hours you can consistently devote to the work. The only practical way to estimate the time is to divide the project into major categories, estimate the labor required for each one, and then add time for planning, purchasing materials, learning new skills, correcting mistakes, and dealing with the unexpected. Experience tells us how much time money and effort it takes to do certain boat projects. This is not unlike how your local marina determines how much to charge you for boat repairs. Or how your kitchen remodeler decides how much your renovation will cost you. This is the same principal applied in all restoration no matter what the vehicle: car, boat, motorcycle or airplane.

Personally, I prefer to estimate my boat build or boat restoration time by “man hours”–because I’m comfortable using hours as reference point, extrapolated over days, weeks, months, and years. Counting man hours allows you to move easily between big project vs. small project estimates.
